Creativity as a Wellness Practice

In addition to asking us if we exercise and eat well, should our doctors be asking us if we have a creative outlet? Should a cancer patient be prescribed an art activity as a tool for recovery? Does a regular painting practice slow the onset of dementia?  For years, researchers have been exploring the relationship between engagement with the creative arts and health. Art therapy is used to heal from emotional injuries.  Displays of art in hospital settings have been used to help alleviate stress. The creation of art has been used as a tool for patients recovering from traumatic brain injury. This presentation will explore the healing power of art to soothe, transform and inspire. Some specific cases will be presented to show how creative self-expression and exposure to the arts have had positive effects on cognitive, psychological health and even on physical conditions.
