Behind the Scenes: A Historical Study of Art Techniques

Have you ever looked at a painting in a museum and thought, "I could do that" or wondered how a fresco is different from a mural or how the Renaissance artists created paintings with such depth? Is Pollock's splatter painting easy? How did Expressionists create paintings? What is the science behind pointillism? How long do paintings take to create? What are glazes? What is underpainting? Throughout history artists have experimented with numerous mediums and tools. They've invented processes, successfully and not so successfully. Some artists have become known for the manner in which they create as much as for their creations. All this and more will be explored in this course which explains the ways that artists throughout history have used their mediums. It's a "behind the scenes" look at the production side of art. We'll "pull the curtain" back and learn how the magic is done. Instructor: Ann Wiker, please contact aeartdealer@aol.com for dates/times. Why did Salvador Dali repeat the dripping clock image in his paintings? Throughout history artists have used their artwork to communicate meanings and feelings. Famous Art Collaborations

When Picasso met Dora Maar, they engaged in knife play but ultimately she became his muse. Lee Krasner was a successful artist in her own right but was eclipsed by Jackson Pollock and ended up promoting his fame. Alfred Stieglitz “discovered” Georgia O’Keefe and helped launch her into the art world. Christo and Jeanne-Claude formed a formidable artistic duo and took artistic collaboration to a new level with their large-scale environmental sculptures. Are two heads better than one when it comes to producing artwork? Or does one artist become overshadowed when another becomes famous? When have personal relationships helped an artistic career and when have they sunk it? In this course we will examine several famous artistic partnerships: romantic ones and working ones. We’ll take a closer look at how interpersonal relationships effect artistic production and success. please contact aeartdealer@aol.com for dates/times.
